Professional Experience and Areas of Concentration
Michael R. McCormick represents landowners in condemnation proceedings against public entities such as the Regional Transportation District (RTD) and FasTracks. Michael entered private practice after spending three and a half years as an Assistant Attorney General in the Colorado Attorney General's Office representing the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) in eminent domain proceedings.
While at the Colorado Attorney General’s office, Michael tried to verdict two eminent domain trials and litigated numerous immediate possession hearings on behalf of CDOT. Michael co-authored the successful
CDOT v. First Place, LLC appellate briefs and received a CDOT Region 1 In-Service Award for outstanding representation. Michael also served as member of the Legislative Review Executive Committee.
Michael is the author of Kelo Confined - Colorado Safeguards Against Condemnation for Public-Private Transportation Projects, printed in the Colorado Lawyer, March 2008, Vol. 37, No. 3. Michael will serve as faculty for the 13th annual 2008 Eminent Domain Conference for continuing legal education.
Michael graduated from the University of Denver School of Law in 2001, Order of St. Ives, with three Academic Excellence awards. Michael began his career in 2002 as a law clerk for The Honorable Larry J. Naves, now Chief Judge of Denver District Court. Michael also served as a law clerk for the Honorable Shelley I. Gilman, also in Denver District Court.
Michael’s practice is in real estate, eminent domain, and commercial litigation. In addition to condemnation work, he has handled cases relating to contracts, torts, real estate leases and licenses, real estate boundaries and access, forcible entry and detainer, toll highway violations, legal malpractice, professional malpractice, employment disputes, and arbitrations.
Michael is active in the local community. He is the State Board Chair of the Colorado YMCA Youth in Government Board of Directors. Michael holds a second degree brown belt in judo.
